In the fast-paced (and often hazardous) world of occupational health, on-site medical clinicians play a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being of workers. These professionals are not only responsible for addressing immediate medical needs but also for fostering a safe, healthy work environment.
In this post, we have a chat with C. Eubanks, an experienced on-site occupational medical clinician. Join us as we discuss valuable insights and experiences that highlight the importance of this position!
What is the most rewarding part of your job at an on-site medical clinic?
The most rewarding part of my job is interacting with a diverse group of people with skilled backgrounds. Every day is a learning opportunity in the field of occupational health and construction!
How do you build relationships with patients?
I make it a point to visit work areas throughout the day, ensuring my presence is known. Offering cool drinks and snacks helps break the ice.
I also speak at site-wide safety meetings to keep everyone informed about the services we offer. Lunchtime — when everyone visits the food vendors near the on-site medical clinic — is a great opportunity for interaction.
Can you walk us through a typical day as an on-site occupational medical clinician?
My day starts with a cup of coffee! I then check in with the safety team, inspect equipment and vehicles, and review emails and follow-up appointments.
I also assist with orientation for new subcontractors, providing a site safety overview and introducing them to our clinical resources. If there are no new contractors, I help with security or take a site ride to stay updated on access changes.
What are your main job responsibilities?
My primary responsibility is to address the medical needs of on-site personnel, whether through treatment or providing informational resources. I serve as an extension of the safety team, as well.
How do you collaborate with other groups at an on-site medical clinic?
I work closely with the general contractor safety team, my direct contact. I introduce myself at subcontractor meetings and provide a detailed overview of our clinic services. For outside resources, I connect with local urgent care centers to understand the care they can provide, which is crucial for workers from other states.
What does a successful day look like to you?
A successful day is one without injuries! It's also fulfilling to assist with other employee wellness programs.
How did you get into the occupational health and safety field?
I transitioned from the oil industry. My company assigned me to a construction site solar field project in Ohio, where I discovered occupational health. It was a learning curve, but it led me to seek further employment in this field.
Can you share a favorite work memory from your time as an on-site occupational medical clinician?
One memorable experience involved a worker with severe dehydration. After providing prompt care and cooling him down, he later thanked me, sharing that his doctor said he might not have survived without immediate intervention. It was a standout moment for me!
What advice do you have for those entering the occupational health field?
Patience is key. It's important to learn new techniques and communicate effectively with contractors and on-site personnel.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work at an on-site medical clinic?
I enjoy riding my Ryker, going to the gym, and playing basketball when I find the time.
What new skills have you learned in your role with MMC?
I've learned to use a Bovie Cautery tool, which is incredibly useful for treating finger crush injuries.
What do you look forward to most when you come to work at an on-site medical clinic each day?
Interacting with workers and learning about different construction trades. Also, ensuring a safe and productive day!
What is the most important lesson you've learned from working with the MMC on-site medical team?
I've learned that building relationships and trust is crucial. Each site has unique needs, and staying informed about resources is essential.
What is your proudest professional accomplishment?
As a lieutenant in a large organization, I helped innovate training techniques and improve crew relations, earning appreciation from my team.
Where do you have the biggest impact in your role as an on-site occupational medical clinician?
I excel in training and building relationships through communication and competency. I'm analytical and eager to learn something new every day!
