Breast Cancer is among the most common cancers in the United States, impacting both women and men. Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed to help with education, screening, and support regarding the disease.
To help increase awareness, here are some facts about breast cancer:
- According to the CDC, each year in the United States, about 255,000 women get breast cancer and 42,000 women die from the disease.
- Some ways to decrease risk for breast cancer include, staying active and at a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and be aware of additional steps if you are in a higher risk group
- Adult women are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month according to Johns Hopkins
- Symptoms vary greatly for breast cancer, some people may have no symptoms at all, but some common ones include breast pain, breast lumps, discharge, and changes to the nipple area
